About Newcastle
The history of Newcastle dates back to 1080. The Normans found the lowest place that the Tyne could be crossed and decided to build a bridge and then a wooden fort (a 'new castle') was constructed to safeguard the crossing. Newcastle history experts tell us that the castle was rebuilt in the 12th century and very soon, a little town grew that was named after it. For most of Newcastle history, it remained a town but in 1882 the cathedral was rebuilt and the town became a city.
For those wanting to find out more about Newcastle local history, why not arrange a trip to the Discovery Centre, the city's most popular museum?
The Angel of the North is the largest sculpture in Britain, and one of Newcastle's many assets. It seems destined to become the new symbol for tyranny and has been used to this effect in many films. It is 65ft high and has a wingspan of 177ft!
Things to do in Newcastle
Newcastle is a brilliant city for shopaholics. With Northumberland Street cited in 2004 as the most expensive shopping street in the UK, you wont be picking up bargains, however at Eldon Square what you will be picking up is style. Monument Hall is a four story shopping mall, well worth a visit. The modern structure is directly above the Monument Metro Station and is in keeping with the authentic Newcastle architecture.
If shopping isn't your bag, there are plenty of other things to do in Newcastle and the nightlife is insanely entertaining. A popular area is the Quayside which is a young, frantic and somewhat in-your-face place to drink. Sea nightclub is where everyone heads when the final bell rings for closing time but expect a queue.
If you're looking for somewhere a bit quieter to meet friends, Jesmond is a fashion conscious and cool bar, a little less hectic than the Quay. The Gate is an indoor multi-complex of bars, upmarket clubs, restaurants and a 12-screen cinema. So if you're stuck for ideas - there is always plenty to do here.
There are tons of other fun things to do in Newcastle. So no matter what you like doing, cocktails at Jesmond, or a trip to see the Angel of the North, Newcastle is a great city to meet new friends.
